Chances are if you’re a successful business owner, you’ve had to work with a graphic designer at some point or another. Unfortunately, as business owners, many of us know everything about our business and little to nothing about graphic design.
Understanding a little bit about graphic design however, can go a long way. It can tell you things like: who to hire, how much to pay, how long certain jobs took and many, many more things.
In this article, we’ll discuss 2 simple ways to determine if the graphic designs you’ve been presented are good or bad.
Method 1: FUN. FUN. FUN.
One of the first ways you can tell if a graphic design is good or bad, is if the designs themselves make you feel emotion. Chances are, even with little to no graphic design skills, you’ll either feel the designs are fun and playful, sad and down, or just outright boring. If you feel emotion when you see the graphic designs and it’s the kind of emotion that you want your audience to feel, chances are you’re on the right track.
Method 2: What year is it?
Method two is all about the comparison game. You want to compare the designs that you receive to the designs of a few decades ago and even to the designs of a few years ago. To do this, we recommend that you use the search tool Google Images. Search for “logo” and then use whatever your target markets keywords are. A simple way to do this is to use the google search exact match function. By adding parenthesis around the keyword you’re looking to match, you can find exact matches. For example, if I was looking for soda pop logos I might search: [“logo” soda pop]. Once you’ve found some, compare the year and what they look like to your own designs and their style.
Using these methods, you’ll be able to accurately assess whether you’re graphic designs are good or just outright awful with little to no graphic design skills.
